It’s time for a Shakespearean summer as Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s season kicks off with a performance of Twelfth Night or What You Will, the beloved Shakespearean comedy of mistaken identity. Book Twelfth Night tickets on London Theatre.
The play, which was likely commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I in January 1601 as part of the Twelfth Night celebrations, has stood the test of time. It has entertained audiences worldwide for centuries and earned numerous awards, including three Olivier Awards for the 2003 revival.
The classic play is set at a moonlit cafe by the sea and tells the story of Viola, who was shipwrecked with her twin brother, Sebastian, who is believed to be lost. When Viola disguises herself as a boy to work for Duke Orsino, the comedy of errors, mistaken identity, and love begins. With themes of gender and sexuality, appearance vs. reality, and love and suffering, it’s no wonder that the play is just as poignant today as it was in 1601.
Twelfth Night in London has a skilled cast including Evelyn Miller (Cyrano de Bergerac, Patriots) as Viola, Andro Cowperthwaite (Dorian, Dead Hot) as Sebastian, Raphael Bushay (National Theatre Live: The Crucible, Oklahoma!) as Orsino, and Anna Francolini (Strictly Ballroom, Sex Education) as Olivia.
The show also features a strong creative team, which includes costume design by Ryan Dawson Laight (Burlesque The Musical, The Nutcracker), lighting design by Aideen Malone (Death of a Salesman, Hamlet), and sound design by Max Pappenheim (The Children, Old Bridge).
Twelfth Night is a play that has inspired numerous other creative works, from plays and musicals to radio, television, and movies. The 2006 teenage romantic comedy She’s The Man is based on the story of Twelfth Night, with the plot and disguises happening around a soccer rivalry.
